On its impressive premises in Antwerp, ATC, one of the companies belonging to Group Van Loon, cleans up to 180 tanks a day. Hard-working tank cleaners, gallons of cleaning product and a boiler that generates steam for the cleaning process are indispensable for making the tanks spic and span and ready for the next load. The steam boiler, which also provides steam for heating liquids in tanks, turns out to be a real energy consumer. JP Pernet, board member at Group Van Loon: "Our energy costs (gas and electricity) are an important part of our variable costs. So it's a cost we like to monitor closely!"
The family-owned company is an independent one-stop shop for logistics and leasing companies, active in the tank container sector. Sister companies are ATR (repair and depot), TVL (trucking), ATSL (all-inclusive services for tank leasing companies), GETS (repair and maintenance of gas and special tanks) and Gebroeders Raaphorst Transport which serves the trucking market from Moerdijk/Rotterdam.
GVL itself stepped to Odot in the summer of 2017. JP: "we had heard about their model of intelligent buying and hedging through the press and it appealed to us. At that time, we employed an asset manager who managed energy contracts at a challenger energy supplier. He was putting a relatively large amount of time into that. ATC is a big energy user, but we don't have the expertise in-house to manage energy contracts optimally.
Chris Elbers first convinced us of the purchase model. The full offer was also better than with our existing energy supplier. The fee was fair, the fixed fee was more interesting. It turned out to be an offer that our existing supplier could not offer. Energy costs ultimately depend on the market and the opportunities available. In the recent period, there were two on which we were snagged with our cluster. Prices in the various energy markets are erratic; as an energy expert, Odot can make those estimates better than we can. Consequently, we recently renewed our contracts.
Transparent insights, clear management info
JP: "we quickly clicked with the Odot team, and that trust grew as they regularly provided substantive clarifications about our contracts. Recently we also received this info digitally through a newsletter. This transparency is important. As a board member it gives me insight into energy costs, I know where we are, and how we got there. The people at Odot provide me with an estimate of what we can realistically expect. That's important management info that I share on the executive committee. We like working with companies with whom we share a common goal. Odot is looking for large energy users to cluster, we can provide that. And we benefit from their niche knowledge of the energy market. Our collaboration leverages both companies!"
Odot as a permanent partner
GVL also recently pulled Odot on board for a feasibility study on solar panels. The intention is that the company will (partially) generate its own energy. JP: "Odot has proven to be a reliable partner, so it makes sense that we involve them in this step. We look at payback periods, which roofs are suitable, which installation is opportune? They also guide us in the financial aspects through their partner. It is a complex project, which is why we are working with our regular partner whom we are sure has the necessary expertise."
