The Dutch electricity infrastructure has reached its limit. More than 14,000 companies are waiting for additional capacity, and new requests are added every month. As Energy Accountants, we see one clear pattern: those who depend on additional capacity cannot afford years of downtime.
Block power (time-block-based transmission rights) is therefore a relevant interim solution. It makes use of available grid capacity during off-peak hours, without you having to wait for a physical upgrade.
What is block current?
Block power gives you extra consumption or feed-in capacity within predefined hours, usually between midnight and 6 a.m. Outside these block hours, you use your traditional contract capacity. In concrete terms, this means that you can shift peak activities to times when the grid does have capacity—a way to plan your energy balance more efficiently.
Why does it exist?
The grid is full, but not always at the same time. At night, there is structurally more capacity available. Blokstroom converts that unused space into usable capacity for businesses. Some of the financial and operational benefits:
⚡Extra power without exceeding your standard contract
⚡Cost control: you only pay for the block power you reserve.
⚡Stability: your block power entitlement remains valid, even if the grid is expanded later.
⚡Faster access because only the grid operator's approval is required.
Who is it suitable for?
Block electricity is particularly worthwhile if you have flexibility in your energy profile. Think of night-time charging, cooling installations, charging stations, battery storage, or shiftable production processes.
Why smart control is indispensable!
Outside the block hours, you fall back on your standard capacity. Exceeding the limits can have financial consequences. Automatic control ensures that installations are active exactly within the block hours and that you make optimal use of the reserved capacity.
Block power works efficiently with solar panels or batteries. Charging at night and discharging during the day gives you more flexibility to keep your connection stable.
Conclusion: block voting is a strategic tool in the Netherlands
For companies that want to plan ahead, block power offers extra capacity precisely when the grid has space available. Who knows, this method may well spread to Belgium in the long term...
