In the graph above, we see, on the one hand, the sharp drop in current variable prices for electricity and gas. On the other hand, we also see the more steady decline in the fixed prices for the year 2021 that we can record now.
In the short term, we see that variable energy prices in particular are falling very sharply. In fact, on some days or hours the demand for energy is so low that rates fall below zero. We are also noticing a drop in fixed prices for the next few years, although less rapidly than current variable rates. At Odot, we are already keeping a close eye on opportunities for the future.
Do these negative energy rates apply to you?

What is the short-term effect on your energy bill?
The decline in energy consumption is causing variable energy prices to fall in the short term. If you have an energy contract where you purchase at a fixed price, the current low variable rates will not apply to you. This is because your energy rate was determined when you signed your contract or when you set your prices, and is therefore no longer subject to the current stock market fluctuations.
In contrast, if you are currently purchasing your energy at a variable price, you will have the benefit of the current low variable prices. So you will certainly notice the positive effect of the exceptionally low price levels on your bill.
For our customers, we always negotiate an energy contract in which we combine both price exchanges, fixed and variable. This allows our customers to enjoy the current low variable tariffs.

The effect of the virus is currently strongest on variable daily prices. On the fixed price exchange for future years, we are seeing a steady decline. In recent weeks, there have already been some opportunities to lock in your energy for future years through 2024 at a favorable rate.
At Odot, we monitor energy exchanges on a daily basis. This way, we do not miss any price opportunity for our customers and we buy energy at the right price exchange at the right time.
