The Flemish PV obligation means that "large consumers" whose electricity purchases exceed 1 gigawatt hour per year are required to install solar panels on their commercial buildings.
Meeting this obligation not only requires significant investments, it usually involves extensive projects in terms of planning and implementation. To facilitate this trajectory, the Flemish government adjusted the deadlines. The deadline for implementation has now officially been pushed back by 9 months to April 1, 2026.
This postponement obviously provides breathing room but does not take away from the fact that a contract for the installation must be in place by June 30, 2025 - a course of action in which companies are also best not to rush.
What does this mean for your business?
If companies covered by the PV obligation do not currently have their contract for installation in place, it is obviously high time because this process also requires preparation.
To arrive at an optimal scenario, it is best for companies to map their consumption profile as well as possible, not only based on the current situation, but also as a function of future developments. The following elements should definitely be taken into account:
⚡A good analysis of consumption and timing of consumption or in other words, how much power is needed at what times.
⚡Futureinvestments, such as installing charging stations for electric cars.
⚡A clear plan of action should the injection of surplus power into the grid still prove unavoidable. Consider, for example, energy shares or batteries.
⚡Look carefully at the terms and conditions in the energy contract.
After all, solar panels are and always will be a sustainable investment, but it is more important today than ever to plan their installation to perfection.
